Sometimes life is about blind luck. Today started out simple enough with my wife and I arriving in New York City to do a few errands and enjoy the crisp weather. As happens, we found ourselves walking to build up hunger for our lunch, which was still a few hours away.
As we walked, we realized we were by the Tom Ford store and as we hadn’t been there since August, we figured we would stop in. Actually, I have to give credit where credit is due…my wife pushed me to try on the SkyFall Glen Plaid so in we went.
We were warmly greeted by our good friend Mario Lopez with a hug as I began to start wandering around. We were talking about the collection when Mario leaned into me and whispered, “He’s here….”
For a Good ten seconds I thought he meant Tom Ford himself, but he quickly corrected me…
“No, David…Daniel Craig is here.”
Now I have to tell you his words did not process right away and I remember saying something stupid but Mario offered me an Espresso and my wife some water and we walked into the woman’s collection.
And there he was picking out clothes for his wife after building a small pile of clothes for himself. We were the only ones in the store and I tried to play it cool by following my wife around the collection. She was the picture of cool and collected while I tried my very best not to bust my eyeball by looking out of the corner of my eye.
He was dressed in a jeans jacket, Levi’s jeans and Skye Crockett and Jones. He was taller than I expected and let me tell you I will never compare my build to him again….the guy looked jacked.
Ultimately we exchanged some nods in the men’s sections, the type of nods of acknowledgement of etiquette.
Now, this is the point where I didn’t want to look like a stalker or creep or whatever but as Mario couldn’t introduce me I was convinced by others that I should at least introduce myself. So, mustering up every bit of courage and destroying all shame I approached him as he was leaving. He walked right toward me (probably because I was blocking his way) and said, “Mr Craig, I am a big fan and respect your work. Would you mind if my wife took a picture of us together?” He looked at me and smiled and said, “Aw, you know…I would rather not”. I replied back quickly, “I absolutely respect that…but just so you know thanks for the work you have done.” He thrust out his hand and shook mine stating, “Thanks, THAT I really appreciate that…take care.”
And that was that. He was gracious and kind and I felt a pang of guilt interrupting his privacy but I knew this would never ever happen again, and as he has been such a focus of my hobby I had to at least greet him.
I was a little gutted not getting a pic but knowing how he feels about pictures it was just as well…and regardless I have my brush with Daniel Craig. Very surreal.
One last thing…this was all plain dumb luck. I had no heads up or call or notice…kismet.
What an amazing story. Once again, that damn Zaritsky has made me jealous!
Same lmao
Oh noes, I can’t believe he didn’t wanted to take a pic with you David. Shame on Daniel.
Still Davids being respectful of Daniels privacy which is good
There is no way I could hold myself for as long as you managed! That is a great story!
How rude of him! Lol. If he’d have known all the work you do as a bond fan he’d of wanted his photo taken with you!
I’m speechless! Such a great story how it happened! There’s something poetic about not being able to get the photo. The hunt continues!
Thanks so much for walking us through the whole experience!
Is this not the coolest thing? WOW! Fantastic circle of events…you were there at the moment that he was and actually spoke to him! He sounds like a real gentleman!!!!
From what I understand, Mr. Craig is very protective of his privacy. I would’ve appreciated a good handshake, and treasure the memory of meeting him in person.
WOW! An amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience! Thanks for sharing your story!
I agree about the handshake…a picture is a great souvenir but integrity is a better partner over time…
Great story David! If someone deserves that kind of luckt, it is you! As you say, shaking his hand is even more valuable than getting a picture. Thats a moment you will never forget!
But how did you like the SkyFall Glen Plaid? Did you even remember to try it after that experience? Regarding Bond suits I like the look the most! Just need to save ‘some’ money……..
It was sold out…but I am gravitating towards the tux to be honest…
How were you dressed when you met Daniel? Ford sweater? P coat?
Hi David! You can have a picture taken with me ,I’m the real deal!
Talk about right place right time, it must have meant to be.
I respect him not wanting a photo, he must get asked on a daily basis. To engage with you and shake you hand though is classy.
Shopping at the Tom Ford store… cool.
Meeting Daniel Craig…really cool.
Meeting Daniel Craig IN the Tom Ford store…
PRICELESS!!!
I must concur with David. A surreal experience….the power of positive thoughts and energy will truly bring you those things you truly desire…..that was my life lesson learned. Great to have shared that moment with you and your wife. Kismet for sure. Thanks for the narrative….it’s the little things in life huh. : )
M
Very cool, once in a lifetime.
I might’ve just added………”GoodBYE, Mr. Bond.” Just for effect.
Wow… i don’t know if i would have reacted as good as you did being in the presence of the James Bond of the moment Himself Mr.Craig. A true Daniel Craig fan would have reacted the way you did when you ask him for the pic and he didn’t agree to it, i know i would have reacted with class’ like you on this, even if my head would have wanted to explode lol. Thx for sharing this amazing encounter with us David !!!
That is awesome Dave. I also have met Daniel Craig back in December 2009 when he was performing at a Broadway Show “A Steady Rain” with Hugh Jackman.
I wish you could get a photo with him. I take it he was shopping there alone.
You should have said,’My name is Dominic Green’ and tried to chop him up.
(Only Joking, for the serious ones amongst you)
You did well David. You handled it like a 00. You honored him, his wife and handled it with real class. Top marks!
M :-: “I would ask you if you could remain emotionally-detached, but I don’t think that’s your problem, is it, James?”
Bond :-: “No.”
M :-: “Don’t worry about keeping in touch we know where you are.”
Bond :-: “You can stop pretending. You knew I wouldn’t let this drop, didn’t you?”
M :-: “Well, I knew you were you.”
Love it!! I visited New York 2 years ago, I only had a day and spent it trying to find the TF store..quite sad probably in a city like New York, but the ‘Mecca’ was my main objective. Of course, I secretly hoped to bump into Daniel Craig or Tom Ford but just having had a browse there is a great feeling and memory for a Bond fan. I’m sure you’ll get your photo one day, David!
Wow, what a great story! Truly representative of “the Bond experience!” I applaud you for handling the encounter like a gentleman, I’m sure it was appreciated. I’m sure he hears thinks like “I am your biggest fan” all the time, but in your case I think he actually did meet his biggest fan!
As a fan of Daniel Craigs James Bond (not James Bond in general) i`m sure if you`d really met “James Bond” he would have had a photo with you no problem. The more i read and hear about DC as a person the more i think he is becoming an egotistcle asshole
I agree. While I’m not the type to be interested in autographs and pictures with famous people at all, I understand that some people are. He needs to remember the reason why he can afford to shop in that store – because fans like David and his wife support him and pay to see his films. Someone mentioned Hugh Jackman above…he epitomizes how I think stars should behave…he’s even nice to the paparazzi – what an amazingly nice guy. Its clear he understands why he is where he is and I’d bet dollars to donuts he’d have been more than happy to take photos, sign autographs, and even chat a bit. DC should take notes…
Cool, and a handshake is way cooler than a picture – more like how the real bond would behave
I agree with chris….. The handshake is more personal. You handled yourself like a gentleman, and so did he.
Very cool experience.
What a great experience and also good to see that he’s wearing the clothes when not on set. He may well remember you if you meet him again
Good for you David! I’m happy for you. What did your wife think?
What a great experience! It was a lucky day for you I guess. Sounds like you played it the right way, taking the high road in terms of approaching DC. If he only knew what you do in terms of fan support, he’d be asking for his photo with you!
hi david,
I really enjoying your videos on youtube.
On question: if you estimate his height what would it be?
Regards and greetings from holland.
John
I met Daniel Craig on a golf course and I talked to him for a few moments about his work. It was pre-Quantum and just post-Royale, he had grown out a scruffy little beard like in Skyfall. He was really nice I considered asking for a picture, but decided against it. Anyway great guy very nice, and very jacked as you said,
I hate it when celebrities don’t want to take a pic with someone. You know, I’ve met some famous people and most will take a pic. You know, if you go into the entertainment business you should be expected to do that. I love Craig in the Bond films, and everything else, but “come on man!”
Daniel might have said ” You expect me to talk”?
I would reply “No Mr Bond, I expect you to Shop”!
Knowing what I have gleaned about interacting with famous people, I like to think that I’d have gone straight for the handshake and words of appreciation instead of the asking for a photo approach. Am in two minds whether DC is a bit arrogant or simply wants to be left alone, do his job (act) and not be bothered. Just because we go to see his films, he doesn’t ask us to, so he doesn’t owe us anything. There is also the old saying “never meet your idols”. That said, your experience is unique to you, permanently etched in your mind. As I said earlier “I like to think” actually I’d have bottled it and not said anything and totally regretted it!
Great story – you’re the quintessential professional!
While on the set of “The Invasion”, South of Baltimore, MD, just prior to Daniel Craig’s shooting of “Casino Royale”, I overheard some fellow background extras saying that Jeremy Northam was going to be the next James Bond. I corrected them by saying that Daniel Craig was the next designated Agent 007. He plays Nicole Kidman’s boyfriend, a doctor, who himself is infected, or invaded, but survives the ordeal in the end.
I was really excited to see the opening scene in Spectre, where Craig is parading with the Mexican brunette, dressed in dark attire and a skull mask for the Dia de los Muertos parade in the old part of downtown Mexico City. My mom was born and raised there, and so I’ve become quite familiar with the city from many summer vacations there.
I think that is a awesome Testimony even in the law of attraction. I am a fan of Bond, And I attracted a Job once that brought me to regular (Work related) conversations with B. Broccoli. While I never met Mr Craig I indirectly helped him with a Land Rover.
I met Daniel Craig as well – TWICE! Waited for him in NYC outside the theater last December where he was performing Othello. He was very nice both times, signed a playbill for me and a James Bond book ( I am a HUGE fan as well, and think he is the best BOND) but alas, NO PHOTOS PLEASE! He would not take a photo with anyone, but would let you snap him as he signed away.
He has a very cheeky British sense of humor, and it was on full display. I was so dumb struck at being in his presence that I could barely speak!!
Send my love and kiss. and I am go to see new Lara Croft Movie ???????????
Have met several of the Bond actors but not Craig as yet. But my most unexpected experience had to be when I was in a small Beverly Hills cafe chatting with a friend about Sean Connery in the newly released ‘The Great Train Robbery’ which we’d just seen a screening of at the Academy Theater. Suddenly I saw my friend’s eyes widen as he looked over my shoulder and whispered “Speak of the devil!” Turning, I saw none other than Sean Frickin’ Connery standing at the counter ordering a sandwich!
As a lifelong Bond fan since the original theatrical run of ‘Goldfinger’ I thought ‘Okay — it’s now or never.’
So, cautiously approaching Connery, who was fortunately alone, I introduced myself and told him that, as an actor myself, I greatly admired his work in a wide variety of films and roles, a few of which I mentioned specifically. And then I added “And I have to say I loved your performances as James Bond and you’ve always been my favorite 007.”
Well, at that point I wasn’t sure what to expect so I held my breath as he smiled warmly and shook my hand, sincerely thanking me for my appreciative words. I can’t remember his specific words as I was too blown away, but I’ll never forget what a class act he was — down to earth, unpretentious, approachable and unaffectedly friendly. Not, I must admit, what I had expected. And I left that cafe with a memory to treasure.
I also met Daniel Craig several years ago, although I dont know if the word met is appropriate. I was in Brooks Brothers and happened across Mr. Craig who gives off a vibe that borders on unapproachable although he managed a very tight, if not forced, smile when I greeted him with a How are you, Mr. Craig? as we passed one another in the aisle of the casual sweaters department. I did not have a camera or pen in hand (the ubiquitous tools of celebrity stalkers!) so I dont believe I posed a threat. LOL! I did actually meet Roger Moore (a class act from the get go), George Lazenby (had to pay to have my photo taken with him but thats okay, I have a sentimental weakness for OHMSS), Pierce Brosnan (enjoyed a one-minute chat on a busy Madison Avenue Street) and finally, my idol, Sean Connery, outside the Ed Sullivan theater where he arrived to do a taping with David Letterman. Tall, broad, unbelievably charismatic and physically imposing, Sir Sean chewed out his young personal assistant as they got out of a stretch Mercedes the length of half a city block and then glowered at the throng of people who had gathered hoping to say hi or obtain an autograph. No matter. This was the guy who kicked Red Grants derri竪re, sizzled Oddjob with his own bowler hat and scored with Domino in the turquoise waters of the Bahamas. I was transfixed. I finally met or rather saw my idol in person without having been rudely rebuked (as had been his reputation) with a scowl or a piss off. They say never meet your idols…I have mixed feelings about that one. And Timothy Dalton? Maybe one day…
