The hardest part of embarking on a journey of fitness is the motivation that gets the body moving and the heart pumping. Once one finds the key motivation, the journey not only begins but continues along with consistency.
Some work out to look better to others or FOR others.
Some work out because of doctor’s orders.
Others, like me, work out to compete with themselves, to push themselves beyond their own perceived disciplines and limits.
That all being said, I have to admit that I will use James Bond as a motivator. Since I wear the Bond clothes, I figured I didn’t want to look like Orson Wells in them but rather closer to Daniel Craig.
Will I ever hit that echelon? Probably not; but that goal and bar is raised enough that I am continually striving for that mark.
In addition, part of the motivation is immersing myself in the Bond essence which includes listening to Bond thumping soundtracks during workouts. I can’t tell you how many times I have used the SKyFall soundtrack to lift weights and really gun it when I hear the tracks called “She’s Mine” and “Breadcrumbs”.
So, what do you do to keep motivated and disciplined in your workout regiment?
Same here Dave, I have set up my own playlist. I use this when running and then working out afterwards. My list is very eclectic and includes; 007 theme (different versions), original Avengers theme, Rick Wakeman’s King Arthur tunes, Bat out of Hell, Secret Agent Man, original The Saint, and of course various other Bond tunes. Still adding.
I like to listen to runaway from the for your eyes only soundtrack. great for hit cardio.
I’ve just stumbled upon something that has helped my fitness immensely. I am a sucker for learning new things – I’ve always been academic – which of course isn’t normally conducive to fitness and strength 😉
So I joined a boxing gym… And learning the technical aspects of boxing has kept me interested. I can’t wait to get to the gym. After just one month of two private lessons a week my general fitness has improved beyond measure. And you cannot downplay the buzz that comes from throwing that perfect combination!
Running a quick three miles tired me out a month ago. Not anymore – 3 miles is a warm up. The progress is amazing – and purely because I’m interested and driven now; I’ve got a purpose for training hard – which in many ways is what David was saying. Without a purpose, whatever it is, you won’t get there – and keep it interesting!!
Kudos Dave,
I turned 40 on deployment and have to tell you it takes a little longer to stretch out after a heavy lift work-out than it used to. I still mix in a good cardio day, but try to keep my regiment focused on heavy lifting with fewer reps (8-10). I have also noticed a huge difference since incorporating more and more pull-ups. I used to hate them, but now I am obsessed! And “Breadcrumbs” is a big favorite of mine in the gym, as well as the track “CCTV” from Casino Royale. Great new site, love the videos, keep up the good work. Now I have to motivate myself to get up at 4:30 a.m. and start my two-a-days!
I celebrate my 40th this summer and I’m getting in shape for it. Started adding pull ups to the workouts and boy do they help!
I have heard of people exercising two times a day…my hats off to them…
I have totally lost all motivation, at the moment!
I found (well for me anyway) that planning in advance helps. It may sound ‘obvious’, but it really does help when going into the gym, you know exactly what you are going to do.
I like the fact that you have to focus, ignore everyone and everything around you. That is motivation in itself.
Reading and using other famous figures as inspiration works for me too.
I’m a big fan of film soundtracks while working out. . Sly Stallone Rambo and rocky films inspired me a lot also the soundtracks, also Christian bales batman soundtracks. qos car chase soundtrack is particulary good.
I have my own running playlist with music from Fight Club, Rocky, The Dark Knight Trilogy, and of course, 007. I also will have the Daniel Craig movies playing in the background whilst I lift. Daniel Craig’s fitness has been a huge inspiration to me in my workouts and is something I aspire to.
Wherever your motivation comes from don’t let it wane…
I have started a second round of P90X this time the doubles version. I listen to a lot of bond soundtracks during workouts as well. I have much farther to go than you but I have a lot of motivation as well. It’s tough work.
Motivation is everything and fitness goals will only really be achieved if diet and excersise become part of your routine. I work shifts and even though I train in my own garage it can be tough to drag myself in there when I’m tired…..a long tough shift or young children keeping you up all night can be hard. I always find that once I start I don’t want to leave. The way I’ve split my training means missing a workout is a big deal for example I normally run four miles only once evert 5 days. This is added motivation to get there.
Professions pride is also a factor. I need to be fit to be good at my job. I never gain without my iPod shuffle ad at the moment I have been listening to my 14 track bond playlist continuously since I first saw skyfall!
If only I could stop raiding my sons treat bucket……
I use a mix of Bond music and music off The Dark Knight Rises score. Any of the songs that involve Bane or the chanting in the prison really get the motivation up.
I’m physically 55,mentally 35 and a bit.Chris Cornells ‘You know my name’ from Casino Royale does it for me.
I have a TV in my home gym and I normally turn on actual Bond movies or whatever action movie I’m feeling. I dont necessarily watch, but having it on and hearing the music and the dialogue gets me motivated.
Must admit it is the Daniel Craig Bond look that has me motivated. The Skyfall soundtrack and the other Bond movie music sustains the motivation in the gym.
The one motivation that keeps me at 44 still working out is, look around, they are all fat. I do not want to be the same as they are. That and the fact you never get a bond girl when your a chunky monkey!!
